I get a real thrill from pushing the boundaries, from knowing that everything that lies ahead is unchartered territory.

Nik Nowak doesn’t stand still. Nor do his sound sculptures – from the caterpillar-tracked, 4,000-watt tank to the unmanned ground drones he has converted into audio-snoops. Nik himself is also currently in a phase of transition. His studio is relocating. And with it the mobile sound sculptures that resemble futuristic vehicles designed to take far-off galaxies by storm. Their circular, black membranes are the only clue to the loudspeaker systems Nik Nowak has integrated seamlessly behind the angular surfaces.

In 2005, Nik Nowak created his first sound sculpture, “Mobile Booster”, a bright green, wheeled object made of steel, wood and fibreglass. Even way back then, it naturally featured high-end audio equipment and loudspeakers. Boasting a far more forbidding look, the matt-black trike clears a path for itself and leaves booming soundscapes in its wake. Music inspires the artist, driving him to push ahead and craft new sound sculptures in which art and music merge.

Nik’s next project is already under way: unmanned ground drones, autonomous robots he will use to project sound. Fitted out with directional microphones, they run on their own and use sensors to detect people. “Echo-Drohne 1” picks up on sounds its target makes and generates a directional echo. It uses a parametric speaker to generate directional sound waves, sending the sounds it picks up straight back to their source. “Drohne 2” amplifies the sounds or conversations of gallery visitors via a gigantic sound system attached to a mast. This creates background noise made of individual sources of sound, audible to everyone. It’s an acoustic experiment at the interface between the private and the public spheres. Highly mobile and unstoppable – the drones’ drive is just like Nik Nowak’s own. Never resting, always searching for the next connection between art and sound. No doubt about it: Nik Nowak has MOMENTUM.
